Questions

What is Advantech’s Remote Evaluation Service (RES) and what is it’s relation to the Wind River Portal?

Advantech RES provides connectivity to different systems in Advantech’s Taipei Labs. These include carrier grade servers and blade servers as well as Network Appliances and AdvancedTCA systems. Together with key middleware and NFVI partners like Wind River we define the appropriate hardware platform (compute, network interfaces, acceleration features and storage) upon which they build their own test and evaluation services open to an ecosystem community of VNF vendors, networking equipment providers and telecom operators.
With Wind River we provide access to hardware installations in the RES labs, enabling access to dedicated and secure evaluation hardware for testing and benchmarking.

There are numerous proof-of-concept initiatives and open source cloud projects, what's so different about this one?

At Advantech we wanted to put together a Network Function Virtualization (NFV) evaluation framework that would give a community of developers access to a much broader set of hardware platforms deployable in many different locations in the network as virtualization is not just about the data center. The community we are trying to bring together is one where people with similar philosophies about telecom cloud architecture who recognize the need for greater NFV elasticity can openly collaborate together.
We believe that by opening up this Test Drive portal with Wind River, we can help developers can get ahead of the curve and begin to test different NFV Infrastructures on platforms destined for deployment closer to the subscriber in the access network, mobile edge and in customer premises (vCPE) as well as the network core and telecom data center.

Who is the audience for this initiative?

VNF vendors, networking equipment providers, operators and service providers who want to test the performance of Wind River Titanium Cloud products, and third-party VNFs on specific Advantech hardware platforms scaling from several Intel Atom-based cores to hundreds of Intel Xeon cores.
Developers can verify if they reach the performance necessary in various service chaining scenarios on a particular server platform. In addition, operators can rapidly verify if a specific platform gives them the manageability, scalability and carrier grade resiliency they require for NFV deployments.

How do I gain access to the portal?

Point your browser at windriver.testdrive-advantech-nfv.com and navigate to the tab marked “register”. Fill out the simple form and one of our representatives will get back to you promptly to discuss your requirements and set up a Test Drive session. From that point we will take you for a full Test Drive and walk you through the on-line set-up. Once we agree on your needs and evaluation period we’ll send you your login details so you can get started on your own.

What’s my choice of hardware platforms? – what configurations are available to choose from?

VNF developers and operators have an unprecedented choice of networking gear available which allows them to tap into the processing power of several CPU cores or several hundred. With connectivity to a wide range of 1, 10, 40 and 100GbE ports, the scale-out and service chaining of VNFs can be benchmarked with finer precision to identify platforms that are able to meet specific service level agreements.
The windriver.testdrive-advantech-nfv.com connects to a range of systems: FWA-3260 and FWA-5020 network appliances, SKY-8000 carrier grade servers and Packetarium XLc Carrier Grade Blade servers for Edge computing based on Intel Xeon D-1500 and Intel Xeon E5 2600 v3/v4 processors. The RES lab provides access to other hardware configurations and is being expanded as new platforms are introduced. More info on RES can be found at www.go-res.com.

Why did Wind River select Advantech RES for this NFV acceleration portal?

The breadth of choice and sheer scalability of x86-based networking gear from Advantech offers a lot of flexibility for customers to test the Wind River product range. Wind River’s Titanium Cloud and RES enable rapid evaluation of accelerated virtual switching and networking infrastructure, along with third party virtual functions, using Advantech’s Remote Evaluation Services.
Wind River believes that in the transition to NFV and virtual networking environments, telecom operators will need solid lab models like Advantech’s to help solve performance challenges faster and choose the most cost-effective solutions to meet fast-evolving customer needs.

How does someone become a RES ecosystem member and/or participate?

We’ll be glad to have you on board. Just drop us an email at windriver@testdrive-advantech-nfv.com.

Do I need to purchase any software licenses?

This will depend on the specific suite of VNF’s you want to test. When you first register for the portal we will contact you to discuss the software loads you want to test and the free evaluation licenses available.

Is there an SLA?

Since there is no fee to use this portal, there is no SLA. However if we have validated an evaluation slot for you we will not take the portal down for maintenance or to upgrade without informing you first. In addition will do our best to support any question you may have but this will be provided on a best effort basis.
